Mom’s Best Cake Recipe

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • Optional: 1/2 tsp cinnamon or lemon zest for variation

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch cake pan or two 8-inch round pans.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cinnamon (if using).
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.
  4. Add Eggs and Vanilla: Beat in eggs one at a time, then add vanilla extract.
  5. Combine and Mix: Alternately add dry ingredients and milk to the butter mixture, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Bake: Pour batter into prepared pan(s). Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Cool: Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack.

Notes

Check your baking powder’s freshness. Old leavening agents can ruin a good cake.
