Beef Broccoli Stir Fry: A Quick, Savory Chinese Classic for Any Season

For the Beef Marinade:

  • 1 lb beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced against the grain

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce

  • 1 tsp cornstarch

  • 1 tsp rice vinegar

  • Β½ tsp sesame oil

  • 1 tsp minced garlic

  • 1 tsp minced ginger

For the Stir Fry Sauce:

  • ΒΌ cup low-sodium soy sauce

  • 2 tbsp oyster sauce

  • 1 tbsp hoisin sauce

  • 1 tbsp brown sugar

  • 1 tsp cornstarch

  • Β½ cup beef broth or water

  • Optional: Β½ tsp chili flakes for spice

For the Stir Fry:

  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

  • 1 large head of broccoli, cut into florets

  • 1 small onion, sliced

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 tsp fresh ginger, grated

  • Cooked white or brown rice, for serving

  • Toasted sesame seeds and sliced green onions, for garnish


Instructions

🍽 Step 1: Marinate the Beef

  1. In a bowl, combine beef slices with soy sauce, cornstarch, vinegar, sesame oil, garlic, and ginger.

  2. Toss to coat and let marinate for 15–20 minutes at room temperature while you prep the other ingredients.

🍽 Step 2: Mix the Sauce

  1. In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin, brown sugar, cornstarch, and beef broth.

  2. Set aside. This will be your stir fry sauce.

🍽 Step 3: Blanch the Broccoli (Optional but Recommended)

  1. Bring a small pot of water to a boil. Add broccoli and blanch for 1–2 minutes.

  2. Drain and immediately place in ice water to preserve the green color and crispness.

🍽 Step 4: Stir Fry the Beef

  1. Heat 1 tbsp oil in a wok or large skillet over high heat.

  2. Add marinated beef in a single layer (do in batches if necessary). Sear for 2–3 minutes until just browned. Remove and set aside.

🍽 Step 5: Sauté Veggies & Finish

 

  1. Add the remaining oil, then garlic, ginger, and onions. SautΓ© for 1 minute.

  2. Add broccoli and stir fry for another 2 minutes.

  3. Return beef to the pan, pour in the sauce, and toss everything together.

  4. Stir-fry for 2–3 minutes until sauce thickens and everything is coated.
